Hi all
I was slightly surprised not to see any other Harriers at this race as it’s not too far away – just the other side of Tenterden. Then again, everyone I’ve mentioned it to has asked where it was, so I thought it might be worth writing a short review/report.
The sound of thunder and pouring rain as I was getting ready to leave the house did not fill me with joyful anticipation. The forecast was for storms and pouring rain all morning and we got instructions at the start on what to do if lightning struck (a first for me), but as it turned out the rain mostly held off until just as I finished. Good for me, but less so for others as it really tipped down at that point and saw all of the finishers huddling under the only shelter – a gazebo smaller than the new one we (allegedly) have for cross country.
The course is an undulating two laps (one lap for the 5-mile race) through pretty countryside. The hills didn’t seem too bad (at least on the first lap) and are concentrated in mile 2 and mile 3 (miles 6 to 8 on the second lap.) Mile 4/9 is flat and then the last mile of each lap is downhill back into the village, so it feels kindly laid out.
The race starts and finishes on the village green although unfortunately I had to skip the tea and cakes afterwards due to the downpour at the end and the fact that I’d left my bag in the car (parking is plentiful but half a mile from the start.) I doubt that the promised barbeque took place given the weather.
Overall, a pleasant run with a small field in a nice village. On a sunny day this would be a cracker – I bet there’s also a good pub there somewhere…
