Race Report: Serpentine’s Last Friday of the Month 5K (July)

Reports

Dear Harriers

The Serpentine’s Last Friday of the Month 5K races are quickly becoming the events where harriers’ reputations are built and club records are broken. This month, nine fit harriers plus an injured one turned up at Hyde Park where it was pleasantly sunny but not too hot.

Geoff Turner was the first harrier to finish (20:15) breaking his own club record of 9 July when he ran the Sri Chinmoy Kangaroo Hop 5K in Battersea Park in 20:18.

I also seem to have broken my own club record (F55) of nearly two years ago at the Serpentine, going from 24:32 to 24:09. (Hey, we all know that if Tara Taylor did an official 5K race she’d smash this record into smithereens, but until that happens I will rest on my laurels.)

A special mention to Ali Farral who impressed as ever with 81.5% age grading, and to the tireless Rose Sawyer, who ran a great race despite having raced 100K only a couple of weeks ago. Also, to Andrew Deighton who was cheering us on despite not being able to run.

The winners – both of Belgrave Harriers – were:

·       Ollie Garrod (SM) with 15:34

·       Naomi Lenane (F35) with 18:35

These races are becoming increasingly popular with the harriers, with Ali and Geoff T travelling from Tunbridge Wells each month, and Mark Godsalve and Stuart Corke joining in London.
