Hi all,
In my search to do a run that was a little more out of the ordinary, I stumbled across a race organised by the Rotary Club or Tywyn in mid-Wales which sees runners attempt to beat a Talyllyn steam train across 14 miles of varied terrain.
Suffice to say, despite ambitiously setting out with the plan of matching the train time (approx. 1 hour 47 mins) I soon realised that the terrain as well as lack of general trail fitness was going to hamper my chances. I finished in 152nd place out of 410 runners in a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, 38 seconds.
The winning time was a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, 37 seconds from David Barratt. The train finished in 1 hour, 48 minutes and 10 seconds with 44 runners managing to beat it!
As I noted on Strava, this was a tough, but terrific race covering varied terrain (tarmac, mud, mountainside paths, hills and streams). So, if this sounds like your sort of thing see the website below which is being updated – https://racethetrain.com/ 2023.html
Best wishes,
Joshua Pratt
