On Saturday afternoon thirteen Harrier women, including a full complement of W65s, took part in the fourth Kent XC League race of the season at Swanley Park. This meeting was the final Kent League race for the Super Vets and the third outing for the Senior/Vet women.
Patrica Salamanca joined the team, making a return to running for the club after a long break, and Lucille Joannes, although a seasoned XC runner, was competing as a W65 in the League for the first time this season.
The weather was sunny but chilly. The courses were modified this year to take advantage of areas previously out of bounds due to the model railway, which operates until the end of October. This provided some new challenges for those running in spikes with numerous crossings of the railway track.
Our Super Vet women ran first. Stella, the frontrunner in the overall competition, was battling with a calf injury and unsure of how she would perform. Despite her pre-race doubts, she managed to shine once again, finishing in first place and taking the W65+ trophy for the season and for the second year running! Lucille finished a respectable fourth in the race, despite losing time to a ‘slight detour’ and Margaret finished 6th in both the race and the overall standings.
In the Senior Women’s race, Amelie Karlsson maintained her streak of top ten placings coming 9th overall and first Harrier. Next was Lauren Mather, who put in a great performance on her second outing for the club, followed by another strong run from Vicky Eames to make up the three-to-score. Jillian Holford, Kimberley Wynter and Susan Cooper made up the six-to-score. In the overall standings TWH women maintained their positions of fourth in the three-to-score and third in the six-to-score.
Many thanks to the TWH marshals, who braved the cold for the whole afternoon, and the other Harrier supporters who cheered us on around the course. The cake afterwards was also much appreciated.
