The Beginners Running Group is a separate group to the Harriers but organised and run by member and coach Sarah Russell.
She started the group to cater for complete beginners who often lack the confidence and/or knowledge to start running on their own, possibly intimidated by a running club but still looking for a supportive group.
How much do I need to be able to run?
All we do to start with is jog gently for 2-3 minutes, then walk for 2 mins, jog again and repeat this process for 30-40 minutes or so followed by a stretch.
If you can already run more than this you will be more of an 'intermediate' in which case we have another group who run for longer (up to 45 mins) and have been coming for a while.
Either way, everyone runs at their own level — you will be gently encouraged, but never pushed too hard. We don't leave people on their own and someone will always stay with you if you happen to be at the back. We can cater for pretty much anyone.
If you are a faster runner, have more experience or can run for 5-6 miles continuously, you will be better joining the Harriers main group.
After a while, you are encouraged to join the main Harriers club night on a Wednesday.
What do I need to wear?
To start with just come along with what you've got — trainers, tracksuit, leggings etc. Lots of layers in colder weather is good as well as gloves and a hat.
Ideally you need to invest in a pair of proper running shoes and get fitted at a specialist running shop — see this an investment against injury. A sports bra for ladies is essential as well.
