Ed Peltor

Ed is a relatively new member of the Harriers, but as a regular sub 3-hour marathon runner and ultra runner, he’s a bit of a dark horse! He runs a nationwide network supplying insulation and plasterboard to the building industry - mmmm very interesting! Here's a bit more about him...

Personal bests, dates and races?: 
  • Marathon: 2.57.10 (London 2008)
  • Half Marathon – 1.21.29 (Paddock Wood 2008)
Why did you take up running?: 

I did quite a bit at school (XC and 800m upwards to County and English Schools level) where I was coached by Bruce Tulloh who enjoyed, after his own fantastic (continuing) career, a very successful coaching career both with the pupils at Marlborough College for 20 years but also with various International athletes including Richard Nerurkar. Furthermore I have always found that it is good for all round fitness and weight control, as well as being very accessible.

Did you compete in other sport before running?: 

Not really despite playing hooker in Rugby Union until my late 20s at a 'reasonable' level at school, university and afterward. Unfortunately I am uber competitive, something those around me enjoy deriding me for, so often I compete at almost everything... apologies!

What do you do when you're not running?: 

Well I do normally have to work! But am serving 6 months garden leave at the moment. I love many other sports including yacht sailing and have just sailed half the Atlantic with fellow Harrier, Andrew Joad. I usually go to Sunsail dinghy sailing once per year and I adore skiing.

Best race and why?: 

That's a tough one, its either this year's Thames Path 50 miler when the rain meant everyone had a tough time - it seemed to give me strength and I finished a very sodden but jubilant 7th in a time of 7hrs 33minutes; or when I was 16 we (Marlborough College) won the 4x800m Chris Chataway Relay. I ran the last leg and was in 5th place at baton handover (in those days I was renowned for my sprint finish!!). I'll never forget that personal and team high and Bruce Tulloh's joy at such an unexpected victory.

Worst race and why?: 

Has to be last Sunday’s Dartford Half where through a long layoff due to sailing (excuses!) I did an 18 year personal worst of 1.29, and Terry Everest beat me!

Favourite race?: 

It has to be the Eridge 10! So unique and so TWH - can't do it this year as I'm on holiday but we won last year so good luck TWH! So thankfully the past few Wednesday runs have gone through part of the park.

Top training tips?: 

Not that I follow this advice enough! But if your goal is to be faster forget piling in the mileage (equals much increased injury risk) and concentrate on interval training (set intervals, fartlek or pyramids). For Marathon running tempo running is critical, that is to say running for say 5 miles at your Half Marathon pace when training for a marathon; or when doing a long run do 2m, 5m, 5m, 5m, taking 15-30 seconds per mile off your pace as you step to the next distance, finishing with your half marathon pace.

Favourite running partner?: 

I love running with the Harriers! especially in the summer when we are treated to journeys across fields and paths that I didn't know existed especially as I'm not originally from Tunbridge Wells (Shropshire lad). I normally run by myself due to travelling etc and seem quite at ease doing this.

What do you think about/do on long runs?: 

The beer and food that I will then be able to justify drinking and eating! Seriously though I have absolutely no idea! But I don’t seem to get bored. I see it a sort of penance to get done as early in the day as possible and then feel all superior for the rest of the day! I often calculate and recalculate my pace, time etc. ... very sad.

Favourite post run snack?: 

A few pints of Spitfire! Often I lack appetite after a run and then eat rubbish so I try to eat a simple sandwich straight after a race in particular.

Lifetime running related goal?: 

To still be running in my 70's (as my Father is), and in the mould of some of our fellow Hero Harriers like John Johnson, Michael Jarvis and Spud, and hopefully with my own knees! And I would like to go sub 2.50 in the Marathon!

Most embarrassing running moment?: 

Running the famous Thames Hare & Hounds Alumni race in 2007 and being overtaken very quickly by Sir Chris Chataway aged 77!

Biggest running disaster?: 

Dartford Half = worst race - sorry, sore subject!

What do you love about TWH?: 

The camaraderie! We don't take ourselves too seriously when it comes to running and life - it's the best mix for me, and the likes of Cheeky, Sankey and Joady keep me encouraged with good old English beer! Also we can't all always make every session and race so the pressure is measured.
