Sarah and John Russell took part in the legendary ‘Quebrantahuesos' cyclosportive in the Pyrenees on Saturday 21st June. A 130 mile cycling road race in the French and Spanish mountains, the event attracts a quality field of 8000 semi professional and amateur riders from all over Europe. The route takes in 3 major climbs including the col de Marie Blanc, classed as a category 1 climb and used in the Tour de France, and Le Portalet, which is a continuous climb of 20 miles reaching a height of 1800m. The tough event was made relentless with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees which meant nearly 800 riders dropped out.
Sarah and John finished the ride in a time of 9 hours 50 mins and Sarah was 1st British woman and 32nd woman overall. There were only 69 women finishers making up less than 1% of the field.
Sarah said ‘the stunning scenery and sense of achievement made this a once in a lifetime experience, it was incredibly tough but a wonderful event!'
