Report from Martin Brice:
For the record, most unusually, I seem to have won a cup in a race. To the left, you will observe the photographic evidence. What's more, fellow Harrier Mark Taylor was there to see me do it and will, I hope, vouch for the truth of this.
I have to confess that I am as surprised as anyone. The race is the monthly Three Bridges Race, which, for the past 34 years, has taken place on the second Wednesday of every month. It is a handicap, over about 2.5 miles, and times are worked out based on the previous race. no doubt I was particularly slow in December because I seem to have been quicker today - hence I found myself in front about halfway round, and decided - as this particular experience is a first for me - to enjoy it to the full. So I accelerated a bit, found myself still in the lead in fthe final straight, and with Mark shouting encouragement, accelerated further. By now I was hurtling along the footpath opposite the Houses of Parliament, leaving old ladies shaking in my wake. They were probably frightened by the sound of my breathing, to be honest. As indeed was I.
I now have the cup for a month, and am supposed to take it back next month to defend my victory. No doubt my starting time will be altered so I arrive last at the finish.
I tell you what though - being in front - how good does that feel?
