2019 TWH club tour

7 June 201910 June 2019

Event Navigation

The club tour in 2019 will be to the Isle of Wight, which has never been “officially” visited by the Harriers. For the uninitiated, it is an island measuring 23 miles x 13 miles and is located a 45 minute ferry ride from Portsmouth. Aside from its famous micro climate, it has wonderful coastal paths, green hills and of course lots of nice beaches.

The tour dates are Friday 7th June to Monday 10th June, but like always, you can decide to leave on the Sunday and be back to work on the Monday should you so choose. There is also 1 or 2 who arrive late on Friday, after work. We will be staying at the Marina Bay Hotel in Sandown in the South East of the island. It is on the sea front and the views are wonderful.

Those of you have been on tour previously know the tours have a history of being convivial and great fun. The run routes can be pretty tough at times, however they are suitable for all fitness levels and also for walkers. Those on tour can adapt the routes to suit their own enjoyment levels in terms of distance and pace. Maps are provided and we keep to groups for the company and safety.

We generally leave Friday morning and stop off at nice country pub en route for a relaxing lunch and arrive at Tour HQ mid-afternoon. We then have a run of 6 – 8 miles, including a visit to the delightful Culver Haven Inn, for those in need of hydration or just simply to take in the wonderful coastal views. In the evening there is an dinner at a nice restaurant on the beach close to our hotel.

Saturday is an all day off road run, quite possible in the Ventnor area, where a series of 3 fell races are held every year. The long run will be in the region of 20 miles and there will be a shorter run of about 15 miles. After returning to HQ we re-group and head off for drinks and a nice dinner a few miles out of town in at a pub called Kynges Well.

Sunday is a bit more relaxed relaxed and generally involves a gentle run and/or perhaps some other activities that we can come up with. There is the option to return back to Kent on Sunday after breakfast or after the morning run and lunch, though most Harriers stay the Sunday night to pursue some light activity on Monday (perhaps another brewery visit to match the delights of Hook Norton and Cheddar Ales is in order).

In terms of costings, bed and breakfast is approx £20pp per night for a shared twin or double room. All rooms are ensuite. Also allow for a share of transport costs to Exmoor (including car ferry cost of approx £35 per person) and food and drinks while out there.

We will be doing a recce or two in the Spring and will be able to provide more details once completed.

We usually get a group of about 20 to 30. While nice to see “experienced” tourists returning, it is always good to get some new faces as well. The hotel has plenty of space so we would like a bumper turnout this year.

Please contact me off group if you would like to register your interest.

Looking forward to hearing from you (we are usually at the club on Wednesdays for a run and drink if you want to chat about it).

Yours in running touring,

Geoff Turner & George Harris

PS Autumn marathon reminder – Marathon du Medoc is on Saturday 7th September 2019, registration opens in March 2019
