The benefits of belonging
For a fraction of the cost of a month's gym membership, you can have a year of all this:
- motivation to train in regular organised sessions;
- advice from experienced runners and talks from professionals;
- encouragement at races throughout the year on all surfaces and at all distances;
- frequent social events and a club bar;
- cheaper race entries and club discounts in many running shops;
- a welcome into a team of 150 fellow Harriers.
Common misconceptions about joining a running club
I'm not a fast enough runner
Don't worry about the whippets — we have runners of all speeds. For our Wednesday evening runs, if you can manage five miles at nine and a half minute mile pace, you'll be fine. If you're not at this level yet, find out about the beginners group run by one of our members.
I'd have to commit to attending every club night
You're welcome to come to as many or as few sessions or events as you like — no-one will be counting.
I won't know anyone there
You soon will do. We make sure you've got someone to run with when you first start and that you get to meet the regulars.
What it costs
Full membership costs £24.00 for a whole year, or £2.00 per full month remaining if you join mid-year.
Student and unwaged members pay £10.00 per year and associate membership is £5.00.
Try before you buy
If you're not sure about joining yet, come along to a Wednesday club run and try us out. Meet us at the Nevill Cricket Ground Pavilion off Warwick Park at 7.20pm for a 7.30pm run. We run between 6 and 10 miles, on the road in winter and cross-country in the summer, with shortcuts if this sounds too much. Let us know in advance that you're coming and we'll make sure you've got someone to run with you. You can run with us for three sessions before you have to decide whether to join.
We've also got a walking section with dedicated walkers and injured runners. They walk for an hour and return to the club at the same time as the runners.
After the run, there are ladies and gents changing rooms and hot showers, and most people stay for a drink in the bar.
Ask for Peter Burns (membership secretary) or Andy Howey (Chairman) - we loook forward to meeting you soon.
