Tunbridge Wells Harriers Tri Club is a small, friendly, informal section of Tunbridge Wells Harriers formed in November 2006. It was formed following the success of some of the TWH members in 2006 and with the intention of encouraging many more 'runners' into this friendly, dynamic and hugely enjoyable sport.
When do we train?
Our training sessions at present are informal and organised on an adhoc basis depending on members needs. We run on a Wednesday at 7.30pm from the Nevill Pavillion, Tunbridge Wells and we often cycle 20-50 miles on a Sunday morning (email Sarah Russell using our contact form for more information). In the summer (June - Sept) we swim in Haysden Lake in Tonbridge on a Monday at 7pm with Sevenoaks Tri Club. We hope to provide organised swim and cycle training in 2007 and encourage more members of TWH to particpate in triathlon events and training.
What are Triathlon and Duathlon?
Standard (Olympic Distance) triathlon distance comprises of a 1500m swim (usually in a lake or river), 40K bike and then a 10K run taking somewhere in the region of 2-3 hours. However, most people start off with shorter sprint events which range from 400-500m swim (usually in a pool), 20-30K bike and 5-8K run.
Duathlon events eliminate the need for swimming, and a standard Olympic Distance Duathlon is 10K run, 40K bike and then a 5K run, again shorter distances are available.
You really don't need very much equipment to get started. Many people use mountain bikes to start with and borrow kit from friends.
How do I join?
Membership of the 'Tri Club' is automatically part of your membership of Tunbridge Wells Harriers. Membership of TWH costs £24 per year.
Highlights of 2006
In our first year, our members successfully participated in numerous Triathlons and Duathlons all over the UK. Ian Wylie completed his first Half Ironman at the 70.3 IronMan in Wimbleball. Sarah Russell represented GB at the European Duathlon Championships in October in Rimini, Italy finishing a respectable 6th in her age group, and Peter Taylor (Club President) had a great season and qualified (in his very first Duathlon in Milton Keynes) to represent GB in Hungary in May 2007 at the World Duathlon Championships in the 45-49 age group. We look forward to an exciting and successful season in 2007.
What are the benefits?
TWH Tri Club is affiliated to the British Triathlon Association (BTA) which enables all TWH members to join the BTA at a reduced cost and enjoy the associated benefits, including comprehensive liability insurance. See www.britishtriathlon.org for more information.
Our Mission
We hope to grow together, to share our collective experiences (both good and bad!) and to develop our knowledge of Triathlon and Duathlon building friendships and lifelong memories along the way.
