Paddock Wood Half Marathon 2015

Waking up to rain and wind didn’t fill me with expectations of many Personal Best Performances being attained at this morning’s running of the Paddock Wood Half Marathon. Of the forty nine entries from the Club, illness and injury claimed fifteen of our number so our thirty four entries set off thankful that, at least, that the rain had stopped, although it was still windy and quite chilly. The eventual winner, Toby Lambert from Winchester, set off at a pace that nobody could match and by two and a half miles held a lead of almost a minute. The rest of the field never saw him again. The leading Harrier was John Law, finishing in 1:15:19, followed by Simon Phillips (1:23:24) in an excellent 3rd M50 position. Harriers came in at regular intervals, with Jillian Holford leading our ladies home in a new Personal Best of 1:38:56. Almost half of our contingent setting new Personal Best or Age Group figures. Those using Paddock Wood as part of their London or Brighton Marathon training must all be satisfied with their morning’s work.

British Para Duathlon Championships, 29 March 2015

Off to the Rockingham Race Circuit in Corby for this year’s Elite Duathlon Championships to defend my title. The course was the same as last year, but the conditions weren’t, with warm weather and sunshine replaced by heavy rain and strong winds, forecast to intensify through the course of the day.

The race format was a 5km run, followed by a 20km bike, over five laps, and a 2.5km run to finish. The race circuit course was pretty flat, but with plenty of twists and turns including four hairpins. There were around a dozen athletes in the PT4 class, most of whom I had raced before, but with a few new faces. I figured that the strongest guy in the field would be Joe Allen, a former GB 1500m runner, who had won the race in 2013. Knowing that I wouldn’t be able to keep pace with him over the first 5km I calculated that I needed to catch him before the end of the third lap on the bike and to build enough of a lead that I could hold him off on the final run.

Hastings Half Marathon 2015

Some outstanding performances in Hastings Half Marathon with Alice Heather-Hayes, in her first race in a new Age Group, not only shattering the F40 Club Record by five minutes, but also finishing in 3rd place behind Mercyline Ondieki from Kenya in 1:23:29. There were PBs also from Neil Clark (1:30:30) and Sonja King (1:48:25). Nigel Duffey in his first Half Marathon recorded 2:09:13 with Bryon Taylor, having run in the Cross Country champs the day before, only just missing an Age Group PB in 2:58:37 and Graham Brooks conquering the Queensway Hill course better than thirty other athletes recording 3:14:57.

2015 Club Cross Country Champs

The sixteenth annual Tunbridge Wells Harriers Club Cross Country Championship took place on Saturday 21st March at 10am in Hargate Forest. Conditions were dry and cold, with enough mud and standing water to make the 3-lap 1.8 mile course a good challenge. Numbers were down on previous years due to clashes with other races in the calendar, but thirteen harriers turned up to compete.

Club Chairman Andy Howey again won this year’s race in a superb and unchallenged time of 34:59. There was a good race between 2nd and 3rd place, with Terry Everest taking an early lead but falling behind Kieran Fitzpatrick towards the end of the second lap, extending to a minute lead by the finish in a time of 39:19.

Dartford Half Marathon 2015

Just a brief report on the Dartford Half Marathon this morning…. We left Tun Wells in unexpected sunshine prompting suggestions that the weather forecasters had got it all wrong…but no – as we headed towards Dartford the weather and sky turned greyer and darker and wetter and colder and more gloomy by the minute…

Luckily the rain held off for the race itself but boy was it cold waiting for the start. Never before have we been so glad to be in close proximity to so many….
